What Is Sizing Like at Zara?

Zara runs small and slim, so as a rule you'll want to size up — particularly in anything structured like blazers, tailored trousers and rigid denim.
Why Zara feels like a different size every time
Zara belongs to the Spanish Inditex group, and its clothes are cut to a slim, straight, fairly tall frame — narrow shoulders, a smaller bust, a neat waist. If that happens to be your shape, brilliant: it'll fit like it was made for you. If you carry a little more on the bust, hips or shoulders (most of us do), you'll notice it fights you in the fitted pieces.
It doesn't help that Zara juggles three sizing systems at once: EU numbers, UK sizes and S/M/L. The numbered sizes tend to be fairly honest; the S/M/L labelling is where the "it comes up tiny" reputation lives. As a rough steer, their Small sits around a UK 8, Medium a UK 10 and Large a UK 12 — a notch smaller than most of the British high street.
Crack the three-collection code
Most people don't realise Zara is really three ranges sharing one shop floor, and each has its own fit personality:
TRF (triangle on the label) — the youth-led line, cut the smallest. Size up, sometimes twice.
Basic (square) — the mainline, closest to true to size. Start here with your usual size.
Woman (circle) — more classic and more generous, often the kindest cut for a fuller figure.
Online the little symbols are easy to miss, but zoom into the label photo on the product page and you can usually spot them.
Where Zara fits — and where it fights
After years of trial and error, here's my category cheat sheet:
Tops & dresses: run slightly small through the bust and shoulders; the slim contour is unforgiving on a bigger cup.
Trousers & jeans: the worst offenders — size up, and note the legs run long, which is a quiet gift if you're tall.
Blazers & coats: narrow across the shoulder and chest; size up if you'll layer a jumper underneath.
Knitwear & oversized pieces: generous and drapey — go for your true size, occasionally even down one.
Shoes: broadly true to size but cut narrow, with no half sizes; nudge up half a size if you're between or wide-footed.
A couple of hard-won lessons

I learned the blazer rule the embarrassing way. Years ago I grabbed a gorgeous camel Zara blazer in my "usual" size for a press day, then couldn't raise my arms past my ribs and spent the morning posing like a shop mannequin. I now size up in Zara tailoring, no exceptions. My biggest win went the other way: a slouchy oversized knit I almost didn't try because it looked enormous on the hanger — it's still in heavy rotation five winters on. The takeaway? Judge Zara by the cut, not the label, and if you're shopping online, order two sizes. The returns are painless and your sanity is worth it.
Brands I send clients to when Zara won't play ball
Love the Zara look but want a kinder, more predictable fit? These are my go-tos.
HIGH STREET
Mango — Zara's Spanish rival with the same trend radar but a slightly more forgiving, consistent cut.
COS — architectural and minimalist, cut generously; ideal if Zara feels tight across the shoulders.
& Other Stories — every bit as fashion-forward as Zara, with a gentler fit through the bust.
Whistles — modern tailoring that actually allows for a waist and a hip.
Mint Velvet — relaxed-luxe separates with real room built in for curves.
Hush — easy, well-proportioned everyday pieces that rarely need sizing gymnastics.
Boden — body-conscious cuts and proper size grading if you sit anywhere between an 8 and an 18.
Reiss — sharper, more consistent tailoring for when you need a blazer that fits first time.
PREMIUM
Me+Em — beautifully considered, length-inclusive British design with the fit properly dialled in.
Massimo Dutti — Inditex's grown-up sister; better fabric and a more generous tailored cut than Zara.
LUXURY / DESIGNER
Max Mara — the gold standard for tailoring that's true to size and cut for a real body.
Toteme — Scandi minimalism with a relaxed, easy line if you love Zara's clean look elevated.
Joseph — refined, drapey pieces that skim the body rather than cling to it.
TWO OFF-RADAR INDEPENDENTS I LOVE
Kitri — a London label doing bold prints and dresses cut for an actual woman, not a clothes hanger.
Albaray — a quietly brilliant British independent with relaxed, generous contemporary separates.
How to never guess your Zara size again
Here's the honest bit: with sizing this inconsistent, conversion charts won't save you — fit precision will. A UK-size-10 Zara dress can feel more like an 8 depending on the fabric and the collection, which is exactly why we built Tellar.
