DENIM & TRENDS
The shapes worth your money this season, the ones quietly dating, and the early signals from the Spring 2027 shows.

If you're buying one pair of jeans right now, buy a high-rise straight leg in a dark indigo, full length, in rigid or comfort-rigid denim. That is the shape doing the heavy lifting for Winter 2026, it works with everything already hanging in your wardrobe, and it isn't going anywhere by March. Everything else in this piece is nuance around that one sentence.
I'll be honest about how I got here. Two winters ago I bought a pair of pale, ankle-cropped, super-stretch jeans in a January sale because they were reduced to almost nothing and I convinced myself they were a bargain. I wore them precisely four times. They cut me off at the worst possible point above the boot, the stretch had gone baggy at the knee by the second wear, and the wash looked wrong with every single coat I own. That's the fail. The win, for balance, was a pair of rigid dark straight legs I bought full price the following autumn and have now worn to death — school run, client meetings, a wedding with heels. They cost four times as much and worked out at pennies per wear. That contrast is basically the whole argument for this season.
The Shape to Buy Now: High-Rise, Straight, Full Length
The dominant silhouette this autumn and winter is structured and slightly retro — a proper high waist finished with a clean straight leg. It's flattering without being restrictive, and it sits comfortably alongside both the seventies blouse-and-fur mood and the eighties knitwear that's everywhere at the moment.
Two details matter more than the cut name on the label:
Length. Full length or a hair longer. The leg line wants to run uninterrupted into your boot. Cropped hems in December just look like you got the wrong size.
Rise. High rise still gives the cleanest line, though mid-rise is creeping back in alongside the more relaxed fits. Low rise exists again, but it's a fashion position rather than a wardrobe workhorse.
Wash: Go Dark, Go Deep
Deep indigo and classic blue are the washes carrying the season, and there's a practical reason beyond fashion. A dark wash reads as considered rather than casual, which means the same jeans handle a Tuesday office day and a Saturday dinner. Light and heavily distressed washes haven't disappeared, but they're doing a different, more casual job.
White denim is genuinely fine in winter, incidentally — with a camel coat and a chunky boot it looks deliberate, not like you've lost track of the calendar.
Fabric: Rigid Is Back, and It's Worth the Adjustment
This is the shift I'd most like you to take seriously. After years of super-stretch denim, the market has moved decisively towards rigid and comfort-rigid fabrics. They hold their shape, they don't bag out at the knee and seat by lunchtime, and they photograph and drape far better.
They do feel different for the first few wears. Stiffer, less forgiving, slightly unfamiliar if you've been living in jeggings. Push through it — most modern comfort-rigid fabrics soften beautifully and then keep their structure, which is the best of both.
"Stretch denim flatters you in the fitting room. Rigid denim flatters you at 6pm."
What's Quietly Dating
Nothing here is banned — wear what you love. But if you're spending money, these are the shapes losing relevance fastest:
Ultra-tight ankle-crop jeans. The short length interrupts exactly the long, clean line the current mood is built around.
Dramatic, exaggerated bootcut flares. Subtler proportions have taken over. A gentle kick reads modern; a huge sweeping hem reads 2022.
Super-stretch everything. See above. It's a fabric problem more than a shape problem.
Looking Ahead: The Spring 2027 Signals

If you're buying with next spring in mind, four things are worth knowing.
Raw denim is the sophistication play
Undyed, untreated, stiff denim is being positioned as the elegant, trans-seasonal option for Spring/Summer 2027 — turning up in structured skirts, tailoring and dresses as much as trousers. If you buy one directional piece, make it raw.
Sculptural and architectural, not slouchy
The London SS27 forecast points away from oversized haphazardness and towards precision: barrel-leg silhouettes and nipped-in double denim tailoring. Structured, intentional, a bit ceremonial.
Sun-bleached and off-white for the warmer end
Pale, sun-bleached indigo, ecru and crisp off-white in lighter weights — often as matching shirt-and-trouser sets — replace heavy dark workwear as the season turns.
And yes, skinny jeans are stirring
The Spring 2027 menswear runways took a sharp turn back towards calf-clinging shapes, with Prada showing skinny cropped trousers in Milan. My honest read as a stylist: this is a runway signal, not a high street reality, and it's at least a year from your local shopping centre. Do not panic-buy skinnies. Do not, however, bin the pair you already own.
Matching the Shape to Your Frame
Longer body, shorter legs — high rise, full length, and get the hem altered properly. The rise does the work here.
Curvier hip and thigh — straight leg in a rigid fabric with a contoured waistband. Rigid denim holds rather than clings.
Straighter, narrower frame — barrel or relaxed straight adds shape through the leg without swamping you.
Taller — you can carry the longer, fluid shapes and the wider legs that overwhelm shorter frames. Lucky you.
Where to Actually Shop for Them
High street and accessible
Levi's — the 501 and the Ribcage remain the benchmark for high-rise rigid denim, and the fit data is well documented.
Gap — has quietly become excellent for straight legs in proper dark washes at sensible money.
Abercrombie & Fitch — genuinely strong on rise and inside-leg options, including tall and curve fits.
Arket — clean, rigid, Scandinavian cuts with unusually honest product descriptions.
Weekday — the affordable end of the sculptural, directional shapes if you want to try barrel without committing.
Uniqlo — reliable, unfussy straight legs, and the free hemming service is worth the trip alone.
& Other Stories — good for the slightly more considered, slouchier full-length shapes.
River Island — the fastest to market on newer silhouettes if you want the trend without the investment.
Premium
Frame — the Le Jane and Le Slim Palazzo shapes are the reference point for elevated straight and wide legs.
Agolde — leads on rigid, vintage-feeling fabric and does the barrel shape better than almost anyone.
Citizens of Humanity — the most consistent fit across seasons in this bracket, which matters if you re-buy.
Good American — the widest genuine size range in premium denim, with fit notes that don't lie to you.
Luxury
Toteme — the full-length straight leg in deep indigo, which is essentially this entire article as a single product.
Khaite — for the sculptural, architectural direction if you're buying ahead into Spring 2027.
Two independents worth knowing
E.L.V. Denim — a London label cutting new jeans from discarded pairs, so every piece is one of a kind and the sustainability credentials are real rather than decorative. Sizing is by measurement, which suits the format.
Blackhorse Lane Ateliers — an East London factory making selvedge and organic denim with free repairs for life. Their made-to-measure service solves the waist-versus-hip gap that ruins so many otherwise perfect jeans.
The Sizing Bit Nobody Warns You About
Rigid denim is far less forgiving of a sizing error than stretch, and denim sizing is inconsistent between brands to a genuinely absurd degree. A 28 is not a 28. Waist labels drift, some brands measure the garment and some measure you, and a high rise sits at a different point on every body.
Three things that save me every time: know your waist and hip measurements rather than your size, check whether the rise is quoted in centimetres or inches before you compare anything, and never buy rigid denim assuming it'll give. It won't give where you need it to.
Get the Size Right Before You Order
Denim is the single worst category for sizing inconsistency, and rigid denim leaves you no margin for error. Tellar matches your measurements — or a size you already know in a brand you trust — to over 1,500 brands, so you can order the right pair first time instead of buying three and returning two.

The Short Version
Buy now: high-rise straight leg, full length, deep indigo, rigid or comfort-rigid fabric.
Buy second: a relaxed or barrel shape in a darker wash, for the days you want ease.
Watch for spring: raw denim, sculptural barrel cuts, sun-bleached and off-white lighter weights.
Don't rush: skinny jeans. The runway is a long way ahead of the high street on that one.
Always: shop from your measurements, not the number on the label.
Buy fewer pairs, buy them properly, and get them hemmed. A well-chosen pair of dark straight legs will outlast about six seasons of trend cycles, which is more than most of us can say for anything else in the wardrobe.
