What to Wear on a Lunchtime Date: Stylish, Effortless and Exactly Right

Author: Stylist at TellarDate: 2026

A lunchtime date is one of the trickiest dressing scenarios there is — and I say that as someone who has absolutely got it wrong before. There was the time I showed up in full evening-glam mode (sequin midi skirt, heels I could barely walk in) to what turned out to be a casual Italian place in Notting Hill. Reader, I was devastated. Then there was the opposite error: a slouchy weekend outfit that made me feel far too underdressed for a lovely bistro in Marylebone. The sweet spot for a lunchtime date is polished-but-not-trying-too-hard — smart casual with a bit of personality. And once you nail the formula, it's genuinely one of the most enjoyable dressing briefs going.

The Golden Rule: Daytime Elegance, Not Evening Glam

The biggest mistake I see — and make — is over-dressing. A lunchtime date calls for daytime elegance: think tailored, put-together, interesting. You want to look like you made an effort without looking like you tried for three hours. It's a completely different energy to an evening date, and the clothes should reflect that. Natural fabrics, a polished silhouette, and one or two considered details are all you need.

Keep the sparkle, the plunging necklines and the sky-high heels for 8pm. For lunch, your goal is:

  • Chic and intentional, but totally wearable

  • Appropriate for a restaurant or café setting without feeling overdone

  • Comfortable enough to eat, talk and laugh without constantly adjusting anything

  • Something that photographs well, because you know it will come up

The Fail-Safe Formula: Elevated Smart Casual

My personal go-to for a lunchtime date is a beautiful blouse or knit top paired with tailored wide-leg trousers or a midi skirt — finished with a low heel or smart flat. It's a combination that works across almost every body shape and always reads as intentional and stylish. Here's how I break it down by piece:

Tops & Blouses: The Star of the Show

A great top can do all the heavy lifting. I'm a huge fan of a silk or satin blouse for a lunch date — it looks expensive even when it isn't, and it signals that this is a special occasion without going full-on formal.

  • Whistles — One of my absolute favourites for occasion-ready blouses. Their silk-blend tops are beautifully cut, come in gorgeous colours, and sit at that perfect mid-premium price point. The kind of top you wear and immediately get compliments on.

  • Me&Em — If you want something more polished and grown-up, Me&Em is brilliant. Their knitwear and blouses are made to last, with clean lines and flattering cuts that feel effortless. Classic investment dressing.

  • Mango — For a more budget-friendly option, Mango consistently delivers gorgeous blouses. Their satin button-through styles and broderie pieces have been genuinely impressive in recent seasons — well worth a browse.

  • Sézane — My left-field recommendation and an absolute cult favourite. This French brand delivers the most beautiful blouses with incredible detailing — lace trims, pintucks, puff sleeves — that feel genuinely special. Available online, ships to the UK, and will make your date think you have extraordinary taste. They'd be right.

Bottoms: Tailored Always Wins

For a lunchtime date, I always steer towards a tailored trouser or a midi skirt over jeans. Jeans can absolutely work, but they need to be the right pair — a dark slim or straight-leg style, not your Saturday morning supermarket jeans.

  • Reiss — Their tailored trousers are exceptional. If you don't own a pair of Reiss wide-legs yet, I cannot recommend them strongly enough. Perfectly cut, beautifully structured, and they immediately elevate whatever you pair them with.

  • Phase Eight — Brilliant for midi skirts with personality. Floral, printed, satin — they do all of it well. A Phase Eight midi with a simple knit tucked in is an absolutely foolproof lunch-date combination.

  • COS — For something more architectural and minimal, COS does the most beautifully simple tailored pieces. Their wide-leg trousers and A-line skirts in clean neutrals are the kind of things that just work, every single time.

Dresses: The One-and-Done Winner

Honestly? A dress is the easiest option of all and my personal shortcut when I can't decide what to wear. It takes the guesswork out of proportions entirely. For a lunch date, I'd go for a midi length in a flattering fabric — nothing too clingy, nothing too shapeless.

  • Ted Baker — Their occasionwear dresses are romantic and feminine without being over-the-top. A Ted Baker floral or printed midi for a lunch date is pretty much perfect.

  • LK Bennett — If you want to feel truly polished, LK Bennett delivers. Their wrap and shift dresses are elegantly cut and incredibly flattering. A perennial favourite for a reason.

  • Lisou — My second independent recommendation and a hidden gem. Lisou makes the most beautiful printed silk dresses that have become a quiet cult favourite among stylists. Bold, joyful prints in luxurious fabrics — the kind of dress that makes a real impression at a lunch table. Find them at lisou.co.uk.

Shoes: Heels Are Optional (Really)

One of the questions I'm asked most often is whether you need heels for a date. The answer is a resounding no. A lunchtime setting is absolutely fine with a smart flat or low block heel. In fact, I'd argue that looking comfortable and relaxed is far more attractive than teetering around in stilettos you can barely walk in. (Ask me how I know.)

  • Pointed-toe ballet flats — incredibly chic right now and perfect with a midi skirt or trousers

  • Low block-heel mules — a little elevation without the drama

  • Clean leather loafers — polish and practicality in one

  • Hobbs makes wonderful smart flats and low heels in beautiful leather — built to last and worth every penny

A Quick Note on Colour

Neutral doesn't have to mean boring. For a lunchtime date, I'd steer towards warm tones — camel, blush, sage, ivory — over stark black or very bright colours. They read as approachable and romantic without feeling like you're trying too hard. That said, if a colour really suits you and you feel brilliant in it, wear it. Confidence is the most important thing you can put on.

The Finishing Touches

Get these right and your whole outfit levels up:

  • A structured small handbag — a crossbody or clutch, not a huge tote

  • One piece of considered jewellery — gold hoops, a delicate necklace or a simple cuff

  • A light layer for practicality — a blazer or a beautiful longline cardigan (Jigsaw does both brilliantly)

  • A light fragrance — the kind of thing that gets noticed as you walk past, not announced from across the room
