What to Wear on a Winter Date: The Outfits That Actually Work

TELLAR FASHION HUB — STYLE ADVICE

By Ella Blake — Tellar Style Editor

A winter date outfit needs to do something most outfits don't: it has to look great before you've taken your coat off, survive the indoors without wilting, and make you feel genuinely confident — not overdressed, not underdressed, and definitely not cold. The good news? Winter is actually the most interesting season to dress for a date. The layers, the textures, the boots. Done right, it's your best look of the year.

I've turned up to enough winter dates looking like a bundled-up librarian to know exactly where people go wrong — and where they go brilliantly right. Here's everything you need to get it sorted.

Start With the Foundation: Get the Silhouette Right First

The biggest mistake I see is building a winter date outfit around warmth first and shape second. The result is always bulky, formless, and a bit sad. Instead, start with your silhouette. What shape do you want to create?

  • For a polished, put-together look: a tailored trouser or wide-leg trouser with a fitted knit is genuinely failsafe.

  • For something more romantic: a midi dress or skirt with thick tights and ankle boots hits every time.

  • For relaxed but still sharp: well-cut jeans (dark wash or coated) with a structured blazer or leather jacket.

Whistles is brilliant for that sleek-but-not-trying-too-hard tailored look — their wide-leg trousers and fluid tops are exactly the kind of elevated basics that work beautifully for a date setting. Me&Em is another one I genuinely love for this: the fabric quality is exceptional and the fits are designed for real bodies, which matters when you're wearing something fitted.

The Hero Pieces: What to Actually Build Your Outfit Around

Winter date dressing is all about one or two statement pieces that carry the look — then keeping everything else simple and intentional.

A Really Good Knit

A fine-knit jumper in a deep jewel tone — burgundy, midnight blue, forest green — can be the centrepiece of a winter date outfit without any effort at all. Pair it with tailored trousers and heeled boots and you're genuinely done. Mint Velvet does this particularly well; their knitwear sits beautifully and comes in the kinds of rich autumn/winter shades that photograph brilliantly. Cos is worth a look too — their boxy fine-knit styles have that understated elegance that reads really well in a candlelit restaurant.

A Statement Trouser

I cannot overstate how much a really good trouser does for a winter date. Wide-leg, slim-cut cigarette, or a flared style in a rich fabric — velvet, satin-finish ponte, or tailored wool — instantly lifts an outfit. Reiss is excellent here; their trousers are cut properly and the fabrics feel special without the designer price tag. Phase Eight also does a lovely range of occasion-ready trousers that genuinely flatter, particularly if you want something with a bit more drapey movement.

A Dress That Works With Tights

If you're a dress person, winter is no reason to abandon them. A midi slip dress or velvet dress with 60-denier tights in a toning shade and ankle boots is one of the most effortlessly stylish winter date looks there is. Ted Baker and LK Bennett both do genuinely lovely occasion-ready dresses in wintery fabrics — the kind that feel considered rather than grabbed-off-a-rail. For something a bit more directional, Mango has been consistently brilliant for satin-finish and velvet midi styles over the past few seasons.

The Layering Piece: Because It's January and You're Not a Penguin

The coat absolutely counts. Arrive at a date venue in a great coat and you'll feel like you own the place — even before you've said hello. Think about what you're putting on over your outfit, not just under it.

  • A longline camel or chocolate brown coat: classic, warm, endlessly flattering over everything.

  • A belted wrap coat: adds shape, looks intentional, works over both dresses and trousers.

  • A leather or faux-leather jacket for something more edgy and relaxed.

Hobbs and Jigsaw both do exceptional winter coats in proper fabrics with brilliant cuts — these are the brands where spending a bit more genuinely pays off, because the coat is the first and last thing your date sees. For a more affordable option that still looks sharp, Mango and Cos both have strong outerwear seasons consistently.

Footwear: The Detail That Makes or Breaks It

Boots are the obvious choice for a winter date — and for good reason. They're practical, they elongate the leg, and a good pair of boots in winter reads as inherently pulled-together.

  • Knee-high boots over straight-leg trousers or with a midi skirt: always polished.

  • Ankle boots with a block heel: comfortable enough to walk to the venue, elevated enough to look like you made an effort.

  • A pointed-toe boot in black or tan: the simplest way to make any outfit look more considered.

Massimo Dutti does some of the best leather boots on the high street — the quality is genuinely remarkable for the price. For something a little more fashion-forward, independent brand Penelope Chilvers makes beautiful hand-crafted boots with a heritage feel that are worth every penny and hold up for years. If you want a lower price point, New Look consistently punches above its weight on boots, especially block-heeled ankle styles.

The Accessories: Keep It Simple, Keep It Considered

For a date, I'd argue less is more with accessories. One thing that feels special is worth more than five things fighting for attention.

  • A simple gold or silver chain necklace that sits in the right place for your neckline.

  • A small leather bag — a structured clutch or a crossbody that won't get in the way.

  • One pair of earrings: hoops, drop earrings, or simple studs depending on your neckline.

Independent brand Wolf & Moon does genuinely beautiful, wearable jewellery that has that slightly individual quality — not your standard high-street pieces — and for a date, that little bit of personality in an accessory goes a long way.

The Golden Rules of a Winter Date Outfit

  • Wear something you've actually worn before — a date is not the moment to debut a new pair of shoes.

  • Rich, deep tones (burgundy, navy, forest green, camel, chocolate) are your friends in winter — they look warm and luxurious rather than washed out.

  • Texture is everything: velvet, cashmere, suede, satin — these are the fabrics that photograph well and feel special to the touch.

  • Your coat is part of the outfit. Don't ignore it.

  • Layer intentionally — a fine-knit tucked into a trouser with a blazer on top reads very differently from the same knit worn loose. Think about the final shape.

Never Get the Size Wrong — Use Tellar

There's nothing worse than ordering a perfect outfit for a date and it arriving in completely the wrong size. Different brands size so differently — what's a 12 in one place is a 10 somewhere else, and working through twenty size guides is nobody's idea of fun.

That's exactly what Tellar.co.uk is built for. It's the UK's leading free sizing tool — you measure once (bust, waist, hips, or use an existing brand size you already know fits), and Tellar instantly matches your body to over 1,500 brands. No size guides, no guesswork, no returns.

  • Measure once — just your key measurements, done in seconds.

  • Use the Store Size Lookup tool to get your exact size at any brand — Whistles, Reiss, Ted Baker, LK Bennett, Cos, Mango, and 1,500 more.

  • Always free. No account, no download, works straight in your browser.
