What to Wear to Meet the In-Laws for Lunch: How to Nail the Outfit Without the Meltdown

Author: Stylist at TellarDate: 2026

By Ella Blake | Tellar Fashion Hub

Here's the short answer: smart-casual, pulled-together and entirely yourself — but with slightly more effort than a Tuesday at home. Meeting the in-laws for lunch is one of those occasions where you want to look like you made an effort without it looking like you've made too much of an effort. It's a fine line, but I promise it's absolutely walkable.

I still think about the first time I met my partner's parents. I'd convinced myself a slightly crumpled linen dress was "effortlessly chic." Reader, it was not. It was just crumpled. I've learned a lot since then — and the number one rule I'd pass on is this: wear something that makes you feel confident, not just something you think they'll approve of. Confidence reads. Discomfort reads louder.

The Golden Rule: Smart-Casual is Your Best Friend

A lunch setting — whether it's a country pub, a restaurant or their dining room — almost always calls for smart-casual. That means:

  • Nothing too formal (a structured ballgown midi is a hard no)

  • Nothing too casual (a hoodie and trainers says "I didn't try")

  • Neat, well-fitting clothes in flattering, considered colours

  • Shoes you can actually sit down in comfortably for two hours

Think of it like a Sunday brunch with your most stylish friend — relaxed but intentional.

Outfit Option 1: The Tailored Trouser + Soft Top Combo

This is genuinely one of my go-to formulas for any occasion that requires looking put-together without looking stiff. A well-cut trouser — wide-leg, straight or slim — paired with a fluid blouse or a fine-knit jumper is essentially foolproof.

  • Reiss — brilliant for tailored trousers that have real structure. Their Haisley wide-leg and their Joanne slim are both consistently excellent. Investment but worth every penny.

  • Massimo Dutti — elevated, understated and consistently underrated. Their trousers fit beautifully and photograph like designer pieces. I've had mine for three years.

  • Me&Em — if I could only recommend one brand for this exact occasion, it might honestly be Me&Em. Everything they do sits in that sweet spot between relaxed and polished. Their soft shirting and fluid tops are perfect here.

  • Jigsaw — their trousers have a quiet confidence about them. Nothing shouty, just really well made and reliably flattering.

Outfit Option 2: The Midi Dress (Your Secret Weapon)

A midi dress is genuinely one of the most universally flattering silhouettes there is, and for a lunch setting it hits exactly the right note. Go for something in a solid colour or a subtle print — nothing too loud. Wrap styles are endlessly figure-friendly. A button-through adds a bit of interest without trying too hard.

  • Phase Eight — their midi dresses are made for exactly this kind of occasion. Elegant, feminine and genuinely well-made. They also run across a wide size range, which I always appreciate.

  • Hobbs — the queen of the smart-casual midi. If you want something that reads "tasteful and together," Hobbs never lets you down. Classic without being boring.

  • Whistles — a little more directional than Hobbs, which I love. Their dresses tend to have lovely details — interesting necklines, nice fabric choices — without tipping into occasion-wear territory.

  • Nobody's Child — an independent brand that deserves way more attention. Beautiful floral midis, surprisingly affordable, and they genuinely photograph brilliantly. Find them at nobodyschild.com.

Outfit Option 3: Jeans Done Properly

Yes, jeans — but only if you style them up properly. A dark indigo or black straight-leg jean with a smart top and a good shoe can absolutely work for an in-law lunch. The key is fit and finish: no distressing, no fading, nothing that's seen better days.

  • Citizens of Humanity — the gold standard for an elevated high-street jean. The Emerson wide-leg and the Jolene straight are both exceptional. They sit, hang and wash beautifully.

  • Paige — another premium denim option with a really flattering cut. Their Transcend fabric feels almost like a second skin, which helps enormously when you're sitting down for a long lunch.

  • Cos — for a more affordable option, Cos does a consistently good straight-leg jean. Simple, modern and easy to dress up with the right shoes and top.

What to Wear on Top

Post Image

With jeans or trousers, the top does a lot of the heavy lifting. A few things that always work:

  • A silk or satin blouse in a neutral or muted tone — cream, soft blush, navy, sage

  • A fine-knit jumper tucked slightly at the front — effortless and polished

  • A fitted rollneck if the weather calls for it — always looks intentional

  • LK Bennett — brilliant for polished silk-look blouses that feel luxurious without the price tag. Their tops read very "together" and photograph beautifully.

  • Anthropologie — lovely for something with a bit more personality. Their blouses tend to have interesting details — embroidery, ruching, pretty necklines — that make an outfit feel special without being overdressed.

The Independent Pick You Might Not Know

Alongside Nobody's Child, I'd also shout out Ro&Zo — a small independent British brand doing genuinely gorgeous occasionwear and smart-casual pieces. Their dresses have a real elegance about them and they're incredibly well-priced for the quality. Find them at roandzo.com. Every time I wear something from them I get asked where it's from — which is honestly the best recommendation I can give.

Shoes and the Finishing Touches

Shoes can make or break this outfit. Avoid anything that screams "night out" — stilettos, chunky platforms, very strappy sandals. Instead:

  • A low block heel or kitten heel — elegant and comfortable for two hours at a table

  • A pointed or square-toe flat — clean, modern and very French-girl-off-duty

  • White trainers if your outfit is smart enough to carry them — but only if your outfit is very polished

  • Mint Velvet — often overlooked for shoes, but they do brilliant low heels and block-heel boots that are genuinely comfortable all day. Worth a look.

On accessories: keep it considered. A neat leather bag (not your everyday tote), simple jewellery, and if you're wearing a jacket, something structured rather than a shapeless puffer. Mango does brilliant blazers at a sensible price point — their oversized linen and their short boxy styles are both really wearable.

The Colour Question

I always lean towards quieter tones for this occasion — not because you need to disappear, but because it's easier to feel confident when your outfit isn't doing all the work. Navy, camel, cream, dusty rose, sage, warm chocolate. These all photograph beautifully, read as thoughtful, and work across most skin tones. Save the neon for a different occasion.

✨ One More Thing Before You Go Shopping...

Once you've decided on your outfit, there's one thing that will save you enormous grief — and that's making sure everything actually fits before it arrives. Nothing derails a carefully planned outfit faster than a dress that's two sizes off because brand sizing is, frankly, all over the place.

That's exactly why Tellar.co.uk exists. It's the UK's leading free sizing tool — you measure once, and Tellar matches your body to the right size across 1,500+ brands instantly. No more size guide guesswork, no more returns pile. Just the right size, every time.

Here's how it works:

  • Measure once — bust, waist, hips, or use your existing size in a brand you know fits

  • Use the Store Size Lookup tool to find your exact size at Phase Eight, Reiss, Whistles, Me&Em and hundreds more

  • Always free — no app download, no subscription, works in-browser
