Where to Buy the Best Oversized T-Shirts (And Actually Look Stylish, Not Scruffy)

Author: Stylist at TellarDate: 2026

By Ella Blake, Stylist — Tellar Fashion Hub

The best places to buy oversized T-shirts right now are COS, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hush, H&M, Mango, Levi’s, Urban Outfitters, and Boden — but the brand is only half the battle. The real secret is knowing which cut, fabric weight, and proportion actually works for your frame. I’ve worn a lot of oversized tees that looked brilliant in the mirror and tragic by lunchtime, so trust me: there’s a real art to this.

Why Oversized T-Shirts Are a Permanent Wardrobe Staple (Not a Trend)

I remember being deeply sceptical of the oversized T-shirt. I’m 5’4” and at one point I convinced myself that anything baggy would drown me. Then a stylist friend physically handed me a perfectly weighted cotton tee, tucked just the front, and paired it with wide-leg trousers. Reader, I haven’t looked back. The oversized tee isn’t a trend. It’s a foundational piece — the equivalent of a great white shirt, but infinitely more wearable on a Sunday.

What makes them so enduring is their total versatility:

  • Half-tucked into tailored trousers for a polished-casual office look

  • Knotted at the side over a midi skirt for an effortless holiday vibe

  • Layered under a blazer with the hem peeking out for that editorial feel

  • Worn as a dress (yes, really — more on that below)

What to Look For Before You Buy

Before we get into where to shop, here’s what actually separates a brilliant oversized tee from one that looks like a hand-me-down in the wrong way:

  • Fabric weight: Aim for 100% cotton or a cotton-modal blend. Thin, synthetic jersey will just look cheap and clingy. You want something with a bit of substance — around 180-220gsm is a lovely sweet spot.

  • Dropped shoulders: The shoulder seam should fall past your natural shoulder point — this is what gives it that intentional, slouchy feel versus just looking like it’s the wrong size.

  • Hem length: For wearing untucked, you want the hem to hit somewhere between the hip and the top of the thigh. Anything longer starts to feel shapeless rather than relaxed.

  • Neckline: A slightly wider crew neck or a subtle V is the most flattering. Tiny crew necks on oversized cuts can look a bit odd proportionally.

  • Colour & finish: Washed or garment-dyed options have a beautiful lived-in quality. Bright white always looks expensive if the fabric is good. Avoid anything that goes see-through when you lift your arms.

High Street Picks: Where to Shop Right Now

COS

Consistently my first port of call for elevated basics. Their oversized tees have brilliant fabric weight — usually a thick organic cotton — and they keep the palette intentionally muted: stone, chalk, faded navy. They’re cut with that slightly boxy, architectural silhouette that just looks expensive. Not the cheapest on the high street, but they absolutely last.

Abercrombie & Fitch

I know, I know — not what you expected to read. But Abercrombie has completely transformed over the past few years and their Essential tee range is genuinely excellent. Super soft, substantial cotton, great dropped shoulder, and they do an enormous size range. Their vintage-wash styles in particular are getting a lot of attention in the press right now.

H&M

A brilliant budget option if you know what to look for. Stick to their premium or conscious collections for better fabric quality. At this price point, it’s perfect for experimenting with colour — grab the teal or the rust without the guilt.

Mango

Mango always has a handful of oversized tees that feel very “off-duty French girl” — you know the vibe. Clean lines, nice weight, and they tend to shoot them styled really well on their website so you can easily imagine how to wear them.

Hush

If softness is your priority, Hush is your answer. Their relaxed-fit tees have a beautifully brushed interior in the modal-blend styles. Perfect for the days when you want to look put-together but feel like you’re essentially in pyjamas. Brilliant for layering under gilets in autumn too.

Levi’s

For a graphic tee moment, Levi’s is unbeatable. Their relaxed-fit styles have that perfect worn-in quality from day one, and there’s something about a Levi’s logo tee tucked into wide-leg jeans that just works every single time. A bit of denim-on-denim magic.

Urban Outfitters

The go-to for anything with a vintage or washed feel. Their BDG range especially does oversized tees in beautiful faded tones — dusty rose, sage, washed black — that look like you’ve had them for years. Great for a more relaxed, street-style-inspired look.

Boden

Often underrated for casual pieces, but their organic cotton tees are genuinely lovely quality. The fit is slightly more relaxed than boxy, which works well if you’re not sure about a very structured oversized cut. Superb colourways and they wash brilliantly.

Two Independent Brands Worth Knowing

Colorful Standard

A Danish brand with a serious cult following, and for good reason. Their oversized organic cotton tees come in over 30 colours — genuinely stunning, considered shades that you won’t find on the high street. The fabric is weighty, ethically made, and they fade beautifully over time. If you want one tee you’ll wear for five years, this is it. Available at colorfulstandard.com.

Asket

A Swedish slow-fashion label obsessed with fabric transparency — they literally tell you the exact weight, origin, and composition of every piece. Their T-shirt comes in a relaxed fit that sits somewhere between “classic” and “oversized” perfectly. If you care about knowing exactly what you’re buying and wearing, asket.com is worth every penny.

How to Style an Oversized Tee at Any Age

The biggest mistake I see (and I’ve made it myself) is wearing an oversized tee with something that’s also very relaxed-fit. Two baggy things rarely work together unless you’re intentionally going for that streetwear silhouette. The general rule:

  • Volume on top, fitted below: Oversized tee + slim trousers or straight-leg jeans + a clean trainer or low heel. Classic, always works.

  • Fitted on top, volume below: Tuck the tee tightly into a full midi skirt or wide-leg trouser. The tucking creates shape even when the tee is large.

  • As a dress: Only works if the tee hits mid-thigh or longer. Add a belt at the waist, chunky sandals or mules, and you’re done. I did this at a barbecue last summer and got three compliments. Very low effort, very high reward.

📞 Never Get Your Size Wrong Again — Try Tellar

One thing that genuinely trips people up when buying basics online is sizing. An “oversized” small from COS fits completely differently to an “oversized” small from H&M — and if you’re between sizes, you’ll know the pain of ordering two sizes, returning one, and still not being quite sure.

That’s exactly why I love Tellar.co.uk — it’s the UK’s leading free sizing tool, matching your measurements to over 1,500 brands instantly. No downloads, no paywalls, no faff.

Here’s how it works:

  • Measure once — using your bust, waist, hip, or an existing brand size you already know

  • Use the Store Size Lookup tool to get your exact size across hundreds of brands including COS, Abercrombie, Hush, H&M and more

  • It’s completely free, works in your browser, and takes about 30 seconds
